Team Awesome’s Summer Reading Challenge

I’m not sure about you but we were all chomping at the bit for summer break to begin in my house. Especially seeing all our friends down south who started theirs before we did. Lucky!Β

But we made it & summer break has commenced! WOOT WOOT!

Something fun we decided to do over the summer was to have a reading challenge! The kiddos in our house will be heading into 2nd grade, preschool, & turning 2 this fall.

So over the summer instead of posting a playlist every Saturday, I will be posting book suggestions for our tiny humans! I will also include some reviews from my kiddos about the books they’ve read, maybe throw in a couple of books I’ve been reading, & status updates on how our summer reading challenge is progressing!

The Challenge: Read 100 Books over summer break!

  • For my oldest: chapter books
  • For the littles: any book that they sit down & pay attention to without getting up

I have made a paper chain & every time they finish a book we will place a sticker on a link. This way they have a visual of how much further they have to go while also enjoying the paper chain decoration all summer long!Β IMG_3044

For each 25 books they read they will receive a prize. A car from the store, frozen yogurt, zap zone, pump it up, & putt putt golf have all been suggested but no final decision has been settled on yet.Β Β I will keep you posted πŸ˜‰

Each of these summer reading challenge posts [including this one] will have Amazon affiliate links where you can: read reviews, read descriptions of the book & buy them if they sound interesting to you. The cool thing about this, is if you make a purchase after clicking on the link [just click the picture of the book], I will receive a small commission. Which means you’re supporting a small business – ME!Β

I’m really excited about all the quality time I will have with my kiddos this summer reading together & I sincerely hope that you will consider joining us!

Here are Team Awesome’s first batch of books:

1. The Sorcerer’s Stone | J.K. Rowling

My oldest & I are reading this one together after the Littles are in bed, one chapter every other night. I’ve never actually read the books, only watched the movies, so it’s bound to be a fun adventure together.

2. Judy Moody Goes to College |Megan McDonald

This is one book from the series Judy Moody, which is my oldest son’s jam at the moment. We decided that every other night [when I’m not reading him Harry Potter] he’s going to read me a chapter of these ones! I will let you know which one we read next & have him write a review on it to let you know what he thinks πŸ˜‰

3. Hooray for Fly Guy! | Tedd Arnold

The Fly Guys series is another favorite of my almost second grader. I find him giggling away at them frequently. When we went to the library he was on a mission to get some. We ended up requesting the one he really wanted, but these are two that he grabbed to hold him over.

4. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy | Tedd Arnold

5. Gideon It’s Play Time not Nap Time! | Olivier Dunrea

This is a fun one for our toddlers, all about a little duckling who doesn’t want to take a nap & how that works out for him. lol

6. Roar A Big-mouthed Book of Sounds! | Jonathan Litton

If you’ve ever visited our home or really been around my children for any length of time, you will know that they love to roar. Yep. ROAR!!! So this was a fun book all about different animals & some of the noises they make, including roar, so it was a big hit in our home.

7. Opposites |Sandra Boynton

Personally, I’m a big fan of Sandra Boynton’s illustrations. They are so friendly & happy looking. We are working on basics, so this was a great choice in addressing opposites!

8. Chicka Chicka ABC | Bill Martin Jr. & John Archambault

A nice spin on a popular classic, all about the alphabet climbing a tree. Even my littlest one was intrigued with the pictures & rhymes.

9. How Kind | Mary Murphy

A fun book about kindness, generosity, & helping each other out. Kindness is a big focus in our house, so I snatched this one up to share & it was a win!

10. Numbers | John J. Reiss

Another book with bright illustrations. & this one is all about numbers!Β 3 leaf clover – 3 traffic lights THREE

11. Colors | Pantone

What I love about this color book is that it has the classic color with one object/animal etc, but on the opposite page it has paint swatch squares with 20 different things that are that color & all the different shades. Apricot Orange, Candlelight Orange, Sunrise Orange, Amber Orange, Macaroni & Chesse Orange, Pumpkin Orange, Orangutan Orange, Basketball Orange, Starfish Orange, Salamander Orange, Carrot Orange…etc…

12. 365 Days of Wonder {Mr. Browne’s Book of Precepts} | R.J. Palacio

This is a fun book of quotes, from all sorts of places, ancient proverbs, famous songs, & even every day readers who sent in their precepts to the author! Definitely inspirational & a great place to find a good quote πŸ˜‰

Post in the comments if this reading challenge is something you might do [maybe with your own goals] this summer!

What are some of your favorites to read with your kids? Have you read any of the ones listed above?Β I want to know!

I hope you all have a fabulous summer, making memories, & adding wrinkles to your brains, as we keep moving forward together.

Namesste,

Sarah
